Covid-19 Testing Solutions
Flu, RSV & Covid-19
In 2020, Avellino pivoted to provide covid testing labs for SARS-CoV-2 testing with our AvellinoCoV2 Covid test. After processing millions of AvellinoCoV2 tests, Avellino has launched an expanded AvellinoCoV2 – Respiratory Test that now detects respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in addition to influenzas A and B, and SARS-CoV-2/Covid-19 and its variants.*
In addition to detecting the Sars-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19 using the EUA Authorized Covid-19 test, this non-invasive test includes a separate respiratory panel to detect Influenza A/B, and/or Respiratory Syncytial Virus(RSV) from Nasopharyngeal, Oropharyngeal, and/or Mid-Turbinate swab specimens.
What is RSV?
RSV is a respiratory virus that mostly affects the very young, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals and is spread via droplets that travel through the air. Symptoms include runny nose, coughing, sneezing, and wheezing, and can lead to pneumonia or, in infants and very young patients, bronchiolitis, an inflammation of lung airways.
According to the CDC, annually in the United States there are approximately 58,000 hospitalizations and 14,000 deaths among individuals 65 and older due to RSV.
Why a Respiratory Panel?
When patients have Covid-like symptoms, it’s important to know not only if it’s Covid-19, but also fit’s another concerning virus—especially if the patient is part of a vulnerable population.
While the symptoms are similar, the viruses are very different. Knowing which virus to treat can lead to earlier and more effective care.
Future Projects
At Avellino, we are passionate about improving human health. As a result, we are always reviewing our list of possible diseases to identify through genetic data analysis for earlier treatment, or even prevention.
Once a target disease is identified, we begin development of new genetic tests using extensive lists of associated variants in our genetic variant database along with available polygenic risk scores.
